During a recent cabinet meeting, Wilmer Mejía, director of Colombia’s Financial Information and Analysis Unit (UIAF), announced that he will submit a roughly 130-page intelligence report to the Attorney General’s Office outlining an alleged corruption network linked to the country’s healthcare system. According to Mejía, the investigation involves dozens of legal entities, financial institutions, clinics, and hospitals, and details mechanisms that may have been used to conceal liabilities and divert public funds through complex financial transactions.

The official stated that authorities uncovered indications of a corporate structure allegedly used to move resources between health insurance providers and healthcare institutions, with financial transfers occurring both within Colombia and abroad. He also noted that the findings could lead to actions by the National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN) and the Attorney General’s Office, although he did not publicly identify all of the individuals or entities allegedly involved.

The report also notes that the Attorney General’s Office had earlier cautioned about ongoing inquiries into a potential decade-long, large-scale diversion of healthcare resources. Under scrutiny are alleged irregularities in registering enrolled beneficiaries, the manipulation of data to secure extra public funds, improper reimbursement requests for medications and medical treatments, fraudulent filings linked to Colombia’s mandatory traffic accident insurance (SOAT), inflated contracting expenses, and the establishment of healthcare entities purportedly functioning as shell organizations.

According to the referenced statements, these actions may have diminished the resources designated for patient care and are still under examination by the appropriate authorities. At this point, the accusations involve alleged irregularities that remain under formal investigation.
